Understanding the benefits of goat products

Here at Superior Fruit, we are open to all aspects of healthy lifestyles and understand that each person is individually unique and what works for one person, may not work for another. So – we cater for everyone! We have products that are suited to organic, paleo, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, lactose free and everything in between.

One of our wonderful suppliers, located in Victoria, Meredith Dairy. They are an on-farm enterprise, milking sheep and goats year-round to make specialty cheeses and yoghurts. Meredith Dairy are passionate about providing quality sheep and goat milk products that are produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way according to leading environmental & animal husbandry standards.

In our household, we are a bit ‘lactose sensitive’ so we have started to trial our switching from cow’s products to goat products.

Digestive properties

According to our friends at Meredith Dairy, Cow’s milk and Goat milk have a similar percentage of fat and protein in the milk. However the differences in the size and composition of the fat molecules in the milk between the two species attribute to easier digestion of goat milk.

When compared to cow’s milk, the fat globules contained in goat milk are much smaller in size. As a result of this there is an increase in the surface area of the fats which are exposed to lipase enzymes within the intestines which allows a more efficient break down (digestion) of these molecules.

In addition to this, there are a greater proportion of medium chain fatty acids in goat milk fat when compared to cow’s milk. The smaller chain size allows the lipase enzymes to process these compounds more quickly. (You can read more about this from Meredith Dairy here)

Some research has found that some intolerance’s to cow’s milk based dairy products can be overcome by switching to a goat or sheep based product – but of course this will vary on an individual person basis.

All I know is…. Goats cheese is DELICIOUS.

You can come down to Superior Fruit and check out Meredith Dairy’s range of Goat and Sheep products. We also have a huge range with many of our other cow-alternate products as well! One of our favourite platter cheeses is Spanish Truffle Manchego cheese which is based on sheep’s milk…

So… goat out there and enjoy!
